A little while ago, a new piece by John Cage (based on a piece by Erik Satie) was discovered in the papers of composer James Tenney (Cage had left it in one of his scores as a surprise koan for Tenney.) I was thinking about this as I wanted to create some music to work to--and because I studied with Tenney--so I created this small suite of five piano pieces based on Satie. Maybe they’ll feel peaceful and inspiring to you in your work.
These take the Satie pieces and change the harmonic and melodic content while keeping the rhythms and registration. Then I added digital processing (mostly some delay chains that I created in Max for Live. I also added some extra material derived from the original and ran that through the delay chains, too.
